Ports, ICDs and air cargo gateways

115 Indian gateways, with the customs location code for each — the code that actually goes on your shipping bill.

Where we clear

At 18 gateways we book, file and follow through ourselves. At the rest we clear through appointed brokers working under a Scapex file, so the accountability for your shipment does not change hands even when the location does.

The government major ports, plus Vizhinjam and Port Blair.

Deendayal (Kandla) INIXY1 Gujarat Sea We file here Renamed from Kandla in 2017. Bulk, breakbulk and project cargo, and the natural gate for Kutch and North Gujarat. Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva) INNSA1 Maharashtra Sea We file here India’s widest carrier and service coverage. Where a thin trade has no direct call from Gujarat, it usually has one here. Mumbai Port INBOM1 Maharashtra Sea Broker network Bulk / liquid Largely bulk, breakbulk and coastal traffic; container volume moved to Nhava Sheva. Chennai INMAA1 Tamil Nadu Sea We file here The east coast container gateway. Routing here removes a transshipment on many Far East lanes. Kamarajar (Ennore) INENR1 Tamil Nadu Sea Broker network Renamed from Ennore in 2017. Automobiles, coal and containers north of Chennai. V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin) INTUT1 Tamil Nadu Sea Broker network The gate for the Tiruppur and Coimbatore textile belt, and for Sri Lanka feeder services. Cochin INCOK1 Kerala Sea Broker network Spices, seafood and rubber, with transshipment at Vallarpadam. New Mangalore INNML1 Karnataka Sea Broker network Bulk / liquid Predominantly bulk and liquid, with limited container service. Mormugao INMRM1 Goa Sea Broker network Bulk / liquid Iron ore and bulk. Container traffic is marginal. Visakhapatnam INVTZ1 Andhra Pradesh Sea Broker network The east coast gate for the Telangana and coastal Andhra industrial belt. Paradip INPRT1 Odisha Sea Broker network Bulk / liquid Bulk and liquid, serving the Odisha mineral and steel belt. Syama Prasad Mookerjee (Kolkata) INCCU1 West Bengal Sea Broker network Renamed from Kolkata Port Trust in 2020. River draft limits vessel size, so schedule reliability matters more than the rate. Haldia INHAL1 West Bengal Sea Broker network The deep-water dock complex of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, not a separate major port. Vizhinjam INVZJ1 Kerala Sea Broker network India’s first deep-water transshipment port. First container vessel July 2024, commissioned May 2025. Port Blair INIXZ1 Andaman & Nicobar Sea Broker network Island supply and coastal traffic.

Codes shown are Indian customs location codes — the UN/LOCODE plus a category digit, where 1 is a seaport, 4 an air cargo terminal and 6 an ICD or CFS. Verified against the UNECE UN/LOCODE list, the CBIC ICEGATE live-locations file and JNPA’s ICD code sheets. Codes change; confirm against ICEGATE before filing.

Choosing the right gate

The ocean rate is rarely what decides the cheapest routing.

The inland leg, the clearance queue and the free days at destination usually matter more, and they pull in different directions. Mundra is normally the shortest road leg from Gujarat; Nhava Sheva carries services Mundra does not; Pipavav wins for Saurashtra on distance alone. We quote the alternatives whenever the difference is material rather than defaulting to the nearest gate.

Clearing at an inland depot instead of the port is the other decision worth making deliberately. It moves the paperwork away from gateway congestion and frequently saves a day.

A note on bulk ports

Several ports on this list — Sikka, Bedi, Navlakhi, Okha, Porbandar, Veraval, Magdalla, Beypore and Azhikkal among them — are notified ports that handle bulk, liquid and coastal cargo rather than containers. They are listed because exporters ask about them, and marked so nobody plans a container shipment through one.

On ports that do not exist yet

Vadhavan in Maharashtra is under construction and has no port code. Rewas and Kulpi appear on many published port lists but were never built. None of the three can take your cargo today.
