Two numbers decide an engineering shipment: the HS code, which sets the duty, and the dimensions, which set the permit timeline. Both are decided long before the cargo is ready, and both are routinely left until it is.
What actually goes wrong
A classification that is defensible in India but attracts a different duty at destination, discovered when the buyer receives the bill. An over-dimensional consignment quoted as normal cargo, then delayed three weeks waiting on state permits nobody had started.
How we plan around it
We classify against the destination tariff as well as the Indian one, and flag where they diverge. For anything over-dimensional we start the permit clock at quotation, not at booking, because permits — not equipment — are the critical path.
Where a consignment can be broken down and re-assembled at destination, we price both options so the decision is made on numbers.
