CBM calculator
Work out volume, chargeable weight and container fit before you book — because that is when the decision is still cheap to change.

How the numbers work
How do you calculate CBM?
Multiply length by width by height in metres. A carton 60 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm is 0.6 × 0.4 × 0.3 = 0.072 CBM. Multiply by the number of cartons for the total volume.
How many CBM fit in a 20ft container?
A 20ft container has about 33 CBM of internal volume, but around 28 CBM is realistically usable once stow loss is allowed for. A 40ft holds about 58 usable CBM and a 40ft high cube about 68.
What is chargeable weight for sea freight?
Sea LCL is billed on whichever is greater, one cubic metre or one tonne — the weight-or-measure rule. Light bulky cargo is charged on volume, dense cargo on weight.
What is the volumetric divisor for air freight?
IATA uses 6000 cubic centimetres per kilogramme. Divide the total volume in cubic centimetres by 6000 to get the volumetric weight, and you are charged on that or the actual gross weight, whichever is higher.
